So when I ordered I said:
Leo: A Venti Vanilla Latte... but a proper
one! The one yesterday was shit!
The waiter took this quite serious and talked specifically to a guy who wore an apron which was different from the normal ones, being black and saying "Coffee Master". This must be some top technical coffee talent level at Starbucks and with the grim look of a professional he immediately got to work.
I still had five people in front of me when one of the girls already called my coffee.
Waitress: A Venti Vanilla Latte... the one
which somehow was not good yesterday?
I was a bit embarrassed and yet pleased that I was served before it was my turn. The coffee house was quite crowded after all...
Leo: Um... that would be me.
Waitress: What was the problem yesterday?
Leo: Well... the coffee was burnt and the
taste just wasn't right.
Waitress: Can you try this one now and tell
me whether it is better?
Leo (taking a sip): That's better.
Waitress: Good. I hope you didn't pay for this one?
Leo: Erg... yes I did.
She looked reproachfully at the guy at the register who was becoming all awkward and slapped his head.
And believe it or not: within a minute they had refunded my money!
I think this is quite amazing and I did not expect this at all. If I had complained about a coffee I just bought, I would have expected a new cup.
But one day after the fact with only my word as proof?
Quite cool...

I once walked into a Starbucks in Sand City and ordered my usual tall coffee for the way home from the beach.
"We're just brewing a new batch. Do you mind waiting a few minutes?"
me: "no problem"
A few minutes later I got my coffee, freshly brewed (and very good), but when I wanted to pay, she said:
"You waited 5 minutes for your coffee, it's on the house."
I was pleasantly surprised.
It is also nice to walk into any random Starbucks (or just park out front) and know that you can get an Internet connection there...
