Microsoft launched the next ad of their Laptop Hunters campaign. Last time we joined Lauren who was looking for a less than 1000 bucks laptop. This time it is Giampolo who gets 1500 Dollars for his laptop pick.
While the ad with Lauren was more focussing on price, this one is about being able to customize and pick the most powerful laptop. Though showing a sense of aesthetics when admiring the beauty of the MacBooks, Giampolo claims that a Mac is more about the brand than about computing power.
But guess what: when taking away the bullshit, the backbone of this ad is just about pricing, too.
What the sympathic protagonist of the ad is looking for is actually available as either MacBook Pro or even MacBook. But - and here comes the rub - not for 1500 Dollar.
I find it interesting, by the way, that Microsoft is so far merely riding on the back of hardware in these ads without even mentioning the operating system. And there is a logic to it: by not mentioning the OS, you do not maneuver yourself into a very difficult comparison that you have lost already. In a way Microsoft actually admits here that Vista is inferior to Mac OS X.
If I was Microsoft, I would build one of these ads on categories, where there is not the same mass of software available for the Mac. The two obvious categories where this is true are games and CAD. Though you can run the PC versions of both categories on Macs through Parallels or (better) with BootCamp, it is obviously smarter to buy a PC right away, especially if you buy the laptop for gaming only or if you need it for your daily job.
My prediction would be that gaming is more likely to come up next than CAD software, as it appeals to a much broader audience...

Hahahaha, that's filmed at Fry's. Can't tell which store, but doesn't look like one of the stores in the Bay Area I'm familiar with.
The dorky sales man, the decoration in Inca style, and the blinky lights at the cashiers are a dead give away.
... and I just realized that these ads are obviously done together with HP... I thought Lauren got a Dell, but she got a HP Pavillon.
This is lamer (and yet cleverer) than I even thought.
