Flying Sofas - The terrible menace that scares the world

The Roeckie came over today to help me get rid of the two sofas I had in my office room. Remember? - I wanted to place the carpet I bought a few days ago and throw out these old pieces of furniture. They did good service to me as long as it lasted (gosh - easily 10, 12 years, indeed), but today they had to go.

Apart from the cheap labor the Roeckie was providing, he also brought his station waggon to get the sofas down to the container park.

Now, as it turned out, "throwing out" the sofas came much more literally than I actually had thought.

After thinking how to move this bulky seating through the narrow staircase (where I had some trouble earlier with the carpet, as you certainly remember), we concluded it would be easiest to just throw them out of one of the windows in the living room.

Soon enough, the Roeckie had cleared the area below, and I was fighting with the 3-seater, which I was determined to push out. Shortly before I did so, an ugly little lady passed by right below and I immediately had to think of some hilarious scenes in the movie A Fish Called Wanda, involving little white dogs.

Anyway, shortly after, the first sofa was airborne and made an elegant touch down on the parking below. "Now - that went well!", we thought and moved the 2-seater into the same position to repeat the action. The Roeckie took care of things below and I was working on pushing the sofa out of the window.

This time, however, I hesitated and did not feel I had the right position to push without risking damage to the display window of the wine store below. I was fiddling around with the sofa, pushed it further and further outside the window and suddenly could not hold it any longer.
The Roeckie immediately came running upstairs to give me a hand, but he just arrived in time to see me loosing grip to the sofa and hoping for the best.

It slid a bit too far to the left, hit one of the spot lights of the wine shop, attached to the wall below the window. Thank god, it crashed down without doing any more damage.

Quite honestly I have to admit we were very fortunate as something could have actually happened! If not physical damage to a person, the sofa could have done some serious material damage (the spotlight was alright and just bent - I corrected its position later).

I think we really lucked out - so, don't try this at home, kids!
